Importance of Mindfulness Practices

Are you too busy for your family, friends, and even yourself? Do you find yourself multitasking to do the laundry, clean the house/apartment, and thinking about the next chore you have to complete? Are you planning your days while driving into work and listening to your favourite radio station or podcast?

In an effort to accomplish all of the things on your to-do list, you may be disconnecting with those around you as well as yourself.

Me too! I caught myself trying to be successful at everything but being present in my life’s most precious moments the present. I found the practice of mindfulness back in 2011 and have experienced reconnecting moments over the course of 5 years.

Now I am on a mission to be consciously aware of my mindfulness daily.

What Is Mindfulness?

Simply put. Mindfulness is a state of awareness. When you practice a mindfulness exercise, you are consciously becoming aware of the present moment. Your ultimate goal in mindfulness is to accept the present as it is, without judgement.

Those last two words hit me the hardest when I first read the definition of mindfulness. It is was very easy for me to accept the present as it is. But to do so without judgement, that was asking a LOT of me.

In fact, it is even asking a lot of me today. After a year that did not turn out 100% of how I had planned it to, I find myself only wanting to accept the good things. Pushing the bad things away.

What I have found when I attempt to become partially aware, I was at war. There was an extreme sense of frustration. I was so angry! I wanted to fix things right away so that everything could be the way I want to be, perfect!

Let’s Talk About Yoga

In 2011, I took a Yoga class at Spelman College. To be honest. I took the class because it was 2 credits and we only needed 2 Physical Education credits towards our Graduation requirements.

Low and beyond there was a caveat when it came to the gym credits. If we took a class that was 2 credits we still had to take another P.E. class to satisfy the requirement.

After I realised I was not gaming the system, I immersed myself in the class. It was in that class that I started to get to know who Terri K was. I had to answer the question “Who Am I” with varying prompts.

At the time of writing this blog post, I cannot remember what prompts were asked of us during the class. But I do have the binder somewhere in my apartment and once I complete my move next month, I will be sure to do a follow-up to this blog post!

Now back to THIS blog post

One of the things I learned during that Yoga class was the art of meditation. Towards the end of each class session, we would meditate for at least 5 minutes. It was an evening class, starting at 6PM. But after Yoga, I was more energised than I was when I woke up that same morning.

At first, I could not explain it. Why did I feel even more alive after 50 minutes of Yoga and 5-10 minutes of meditation? I quickly learned that it was because I was becoming more aware of my Inner Self and how she connected to my Outer Self.

It was extremely easy to relate to my Outer Self because I could see her in the mirror. Taking that Yoga class helped me to understand that my Inner Self deserved as much attention as I was giving the girl in the mirror.

21-Day Meditation Challenges

This October-November 2016 saw me take my fourth 21-day meditation challenge with Oprah & Deepak. Back in October 2014, I took my first one, which was an interesting time in my life.

As a recent graduate with my Master’s degree from Georgia State University, I was trying to figure out what the next chapter of my life looked like.

I took 2 challenges in 2015, one in February and the other in November. At each of those times, I was trying to find define a relationship that didn’t seem to be going in the direction I wanted it to go.

Now. Let us fast forward to last month and the start of my most recent meditation challenge. The title of this one was Creating Peace from the Inside Out The Power of Connection.

For me, there were two power words in the name of this meditation challenge that convinced me to sign up for the challenge. They were Peace and Connection.

A Recent Talk Led To This

In a few conversations with a friend, I expressed to him that I was finding it difficult to connect with him. It was causing me to not be at peace in my life. The timing of the meditation challenge could not have been any more perfect because I truly felt disconnected from the guy I was talking to but most importantly myself.

At the time of writing this blog post, I am 2 days shy of finishing the meditation challenge. However, I have come to realise one important truth about myself. The ONLY person who can truly bring peace to my life is myself.

Reflecting on those conversations with my friend, I was placing the duty on him. The issue with that was it was not his responsibility. He was responsible for himself, his own peace of mind and happiness.

As much as I wanted someone else to care about my peace of mind and happiness outside of myself, that was an unfair burden to place on him.
